We were in the same boat. We evacuated to Dallas and spent the better part of 3 days trying to register with FEMA. Then we found out our application was rejected until we contact our insurance company and find out what they will do. We did get something in the mail today with an application for a LOAN through the Small Business Admin. I only hope we can be reimbursed for the first 4 days of our hotel stay. FEMA did take care of the last 3 days.
We evacuated to Dallas and called FEMA. It took several hours because when you first get connected you hear "other reps are busy helping others" your call is automatically disconnected. If you are lucky to get your call transferred the next step is to have it disconnected because of "reps too busy". You basically have to wait until 2am-4am and it took about 10 tries of constant redial. I have lived at my home 1 year and FEMA said they needed proof. I faxed it in from the hotel and it took 6 DAYS TO UPDATE. It doesnt matter what kind of insurance you have they tell you your denied even though they say they are just waiting to have your proof of occupancy before the hurricane updated. Basically you are punished for having insurance and insurance doesnt give motel vouchers right away. For people that used their last dollar on hotels the system doesnt work. Its been 3 days and no communication from insurance. And they wonder why people are sleeping in cars that evacuated.
