RE: Downtown Beaumont Apartments

As a single man and Enterprise employee that happens to fall within those guidelines, I take offense to someone saying I'm "low income".  I have a house, car, food, and a checking account.

Now the house payment may be behind, the phone shut-off, the car paid off, refrigerator bare, and checking account overdrawn, but I still HAVE them.

I guess I am "low income."  Ah well.

Ive lived in this area all my life and I have seen it go down, as far as peoples attitudes. I think all the good help has moved off. You can go to a restaurant or retail store and no one seems to want to help. Its rare you get what you ask for or information you need. I can go to Houston and Im treated like a VIP. Even if they dont have the answers for me, they are more than willing to get them ASAP. At restaurants they make you feel like you are the President. Even the fast food places are so much more competent.
Im all for helping people out when they need it. I used to live in low-income housing until I could get back on my feet. But, the thing is people that are on welfare or low-income usually dont do anything to improve themselves. (Whether they cant or wont.) They don't realize the government is getting money from the people who out there busting it to help them out.

Its sad that some people think that if you do not make enough money you are lazy.  Many people work very hard and barely earn a decent wage.

On what grounds do you base this claim? Specifics, please.

MORE low income housing!!!!!!!! My husband and I moved here from Dallas a few months ago. When we came down here trying to find an apartment to rent all the nice complexes were income restricted or $900 for a one bedroom. Give me a break. I know that a large percentage of the city lives below the poverty line. I must say that a large percentage of the city is lazy, as well. Coincidence? It takes months to do things that take weeks in Dallas/Fort Worth. It's almost impossible to find help in this town that actually wants to work! Furthermore, who fits the bill for the low income housing? The government...who gets there money from people, like me, that work their tales off to make an HONEST dollar. I should just stop working so hard so I can live in a gorgeous apartment/townhome for 1/4 of what my mortgage is now.

These are great ideas.  Future Mayorette Becky Ames doesn't seem to think so.  She must own property downtown.

Quibling over parking....  please.

Affordablel housing is cool as long as someone else pays the real bill. Like the federal government. Just ask any developer. Parking should be no problem since there will be SO MANY jobs that pay 20 to 30g downtown. (bicycles) And living downtown with all the great shopping would be a blessing. Drugstores, groceries, Sam's Club, emergency rooms, etc., all of these are on a bus route. Entertainment-well there are all of the activities at Weiss Park on any night to consider, not counting Cracket Street. Schools - no problem- we have the highest paid superintendent in the universe. I say go for it!

Great. Anything that will put people downtown will motivate continued progress. Like chicken soup, it wont hurt.

Plans have been made to convert both the former Antioch Church and Neches Electric Co. building into low-income apartments.

The church will have eight units and the electric company building will have 28 units.

Parking has been raised as a potential problem.

That the housing is targeting people who make between $22,000 to $34,000 depending on household size has also been challenged.

Clcik REPLY and tell us what you think about affordable housing, downtown living and the parking situation.
